Luke (Film) is a character in The Handmaid's Tale film.
He is only seen at the beginning of the film, on a road in the backcountry. He was driving an SUV when he takes a pit stop and his wife Kate gets out, offering to trade places with him. It is revealed they were attempting to flee the Republic of Gilead, and ventured towards desolate areas to escape detection. The couple intended to flee to "Free America", which was a part of the United States that had been contested and was not under control of Gileadean forces. However, their flight had not gone unnoticed. Nearing a snowbank, the couple is shocked to see a HMMV appear out of nowhere. A soldier on loudspeaker orders the SUV to turn back to Gilead or they will open fire. Luke stops the vehicle, then orders Kate to grab their daughter, Jill. They are then fired upon, and Luke grabs a machine gun to return fire. As he is drawing fire, Luke yells at Kate to flee with Jill, but it turns out to be the last conversation he has with his bride as he is mortally wounded. Kate watches in horror, and then is apprehended and forcibly taken to another part of Gilead where she is remanded to an indoctrination center run by Aunt Lydia. Besides the loss of her husband, Kate is disturbed by nightmares of the last sight of her daughter, wandering in the backcountry by herself crying out for her parents.
