Jim Thorne is a flashback character in The Handmaid's Tale. He's the principal in the elementary school in which Lydia Clements worked prior to the rise of Gilead.

At New Year's Eve, Lydia goes out to a bar, where she meets Jim. They share some drinks and snacks, saying grace before they enjoy their food, and then perform karaoke together. The two make out, and when Lydia tries to have sex with Jim, he refuses, claiming it's too soon since his wife's death three years past. An ashamed and embarrassed Lydia smashes her mirror, crying to herself.
A short time later, Jim watches in disgust when Lydia is confronted by Noelle, the single mother of Ryan, who loses custody of her son after Lydia decides to report Noelle as an unfit mother to the authorities, which results in Ryan being taken to foster care.
