Mark Tuello introduces June and Luke to Elijah Vance, who is tasked to command a raid of Hannah's wife school in Colorado Springs, where three aircraft will fly into Gilead under the radar, and paratroopers will drop in and recover 30 girls. As June objects that the girls will be terrified, Vance offers reassurance by way of telling them about his own daughter, Emma.
In the control center during the live feed footage of the evacuation, the plane icons on the map suddenly go red and stop transmitting information. Tuello later tells June and Luke that Gilead anticipated the mission and took down all three planes as soon as they crossed the border, and there were no survivors.
At a vigil for the victims of the failed mission, Tuello reads the names of the dead, among them Commander Vance, with anti-refugee protesters shouting angrily. His daughter Emma recites the Pledge of Allegiance.
