Commander Fred is a character in The Handmaid's Tale film. He is the head of the household where Kate is enslaved as a Handmaid.
Commander Fred was previously dealing with Numbers. He was a closeted White supremacist, homophobic and male chauvinist. His chauvinism seemed to be the strongest, showing disdain for feminists most of all. His chauvinism was not absolute, as he also expressed disdain and contempt for heterosexual men who did not seek traditional marriage and focused on casual sex, as well as those who treated women like objects.
It was implied that prior to the rise of Gilead he was a flag officer in the American uniformed services and was a key player in orchestrating the demise of the United States government. Despite his firm beliefs in Gilead, he attempts to do some things for Kate during her tenure as a Handmaid in his house to make their relationship a quasi-marriage, such as getting her items in shortage such as hand lotion. He also learns through a background check that Kate was a librarian when she lived in the United States, and allows her to read books and play Scrabble, which are generally discouraged for women in Gilead.
