Commander Matthew Calhoun is a minor yet recurring character in The Handmaid's Tale (Series). He is a Commander in Gilead to whom the Handmaid Natalie was assigned as Ofmatthew until her death.

Story[]

He is present at the meeting in Commander Lawrence's study[1] and visits the reception at the Putnams[2].

After the arrest of Fred Waterford, Calhoun becomes the leading figure on the Council. He imposes no further sentences on Aunt Lydia after 19 days of questioning, but reminds her that it is not an exoneration and that she is responsible for the disappearance of 86 children.[3]

He later meets with Commander Lawrence to discuss a potential ceasefire to allow NGOs to come in and provide aid in order to strengthen Gilead's repuatation and combat the sanctions. Calhoun initially rejects the proposals, but accepts after Lawrence finds information to blackmail Calhoun via Aunt Lydia.[4]

In season 5, episode 2 (Ballet), Commander Calhoun is present when Serena address's the informal council at the wake of her husband, Fred, held at the Putnam's house.
