Accents
I'm no good at accents, really. I'm a Geordie woman (i.e. someone born on Tyneside in the north east of England) who moved Dahn Sahf in my teens and never quite lost my native accent, which just does its own thing. So much so that while it half-heartedly followed me it took a detour through Ireland; in spite of me never having set foot in the place, I had even Irish people asking me which part of Ireland I was from. Bizarre. Considering I can't even manage my own accent(s) properly, I'm hopeless at trying to do other people's and not much better at recognising them.
So, having set the scene, actors and accents. They range from the bloody awful, such as Kevin Costner who as Robin Hood may as well have just said, "howdy y'all! Ah'm Rabi…
And now, the film
Now I've done the belated catch-up (speaking as someone who hardly watches any telly, doing series 1 to 4 in under a month was I think pretty impressive going: not least as it turned the stress up to 11 and snapped the knob off) I need something else to watch. Could start again from the beginning as there's always stuff I missed and new perspectives the second time round, but figured I'd take "a break" and watch the 1990 film.
Interestingly different take in some ways, but absolutely the same in others: "interestingly different" because of all those '80s hairdos and cheesy movie music from the era. Also quite nostalgic for me as that was the last time I was in the US, nearly; dunno where its take on Offred's part of Gilead is supposed to …
Belated catch-up
"Create a blog", it says. Well that's easy for you to say, Fandom, but I'm not really the creative type. Do these things serve a purpose? Does anybody read them?
So here it is merry Christmas, everybody's having fun er I mean my rather belated catch-up with The Handmaid's Tale. By "catch-up" I actually mean "getting around to watching for the first time", which is fairly typical of me in that it's years after everybody else, and probably years after everybody else has moved on. At least I've finally stopped calling it "The Handmaid's Tail", which my imagination seems to have helpfully conjured up as a mix between the book and a Goldfrapp concert.
