Aunt Lydia is a character in The Handmaid's Tale film.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Personality[]
She has a stern personality and takes a strong stance against extramarital sex. She is first seen when a convoy arrives at the Red Center and soldiers order June and several other women off. Aunt Lydia introduces herself and says they are blessed to be fertile. She is later seen at various times lecturing June and the other women about their duties to be as Handmaids. One candidate tearily admits she succumbed to the pressures of extramarital sex from a man, and this is pointed out as an example of women misusing sexuality and disgusting men who saw sex as nothing more than amusement, although she does hug the tearful woman, assuring her a better path awaits.
Moira plots her escape when the candidates are ordered to be in bed. She claims the restroom is broken, then later attacks Aunt Lydia, chaining her to a urinal and stealing her clothes. Moira is then seen wearing Lydia's skirt and sweater and walking past a sentry, who takes no notice of her.
Aunt Lydia is last seen announcing the execution of a Handmaid for an unspecified sexual offense. She also condemns a man who was accused of attacking a pregnant woman, killing her and the baby. A mob of angry Handmaids beat the condemned man to death. June, who is observing this, is told by another Handmaid the man did no such thing.
