I'm woundering why is it that.............

Since the totalitarian society set in Gilead most resembles the Republican mindset. Why would they be blaming the other side for the environmental disasters that plague them, when clearly that same Republican mindset would be the ones to set in motion the events that would create the condition for such an environmental catastrophe ?

Plot Twists & Teasers

Hey there...have you noticed some oddities in the Hulu series? I've mentioned a few things before in comments, talking about placing the time of the show.

Those in Gilead remind me of Mennonites I know that live in clusters. The women wear a uniform, a smock dress of a small, light pattern, over a blouse; with a head covering bonnet. The women only wear skirts or dresses. What the women wear is dictated by the ruling church leader for that cluster (always a man). The men only wear button-down shirts, with or without a vest, and slacks. Large families are encouraged. Children dress like their parents, and work alongside their parents.
The live somewhat communally (the cluster), sharing things with each other. Technology is rare to see. There is often a computer, that may or may not have internet access. They raise animals and food, and create things for income, like the men selling and installing sheds or odd jobs to your home. They strive to live according to God's Word, which is why they dress in a recognizable way, and have their own community ("...be in the world by not of the world...").

In the show promotions, Fred's poster says "Know the Lies Behind Their Laws." Finding these details, to me, is fun.

In the episode "Women's Work" we see Serena producing printed documents, but we don't see a typewriter, much less a computer or a printer. The availability of colored pens is also shown to us. In "Seeds", when Aunt Lydia was checking on OfFred/June's progress, Serena is surprised that Lydia has a pencil, and Lydia explains it away as a necessity of her work.

If those in Gilead, like the cloistered Mennonites, have put aside most technology for a simpler life, how do they produce printed documents? Have you noticed why they need Martha's? The kitchen is all manual. Have you noticed the style of furniture? Every home seems decorated pretty much the same way, with wardrobes (armoirs) that are of gorgeous wood and construction.

If they gave up their worldly life for simpler things, what is Commander McKenzie doing with a pristine collector's Camaro in the garage? (If you aren't a gear head, the car is from the 1980s and Boston Red Sox won the World Series in October 2013, making the car about 25 years old. "Present day" is something after October 2013. In another scene, OfFred is in her attic room, and muses about her room in Gilead being part of AirBnB, which began in August 2008, and was quite popular by late 2013.)

Oh, the Lies Behind Their Laws.

PS: In "The Last Ceremony," where OfFred has false labor, does bigotry live in this idealistic society? As Fred is passing out cigars, a new Commander is introduced, but not offered a cigar. He was promoted to Commander because he and his wife conceived a child. Interesting way to earn a promotion! Why did he not receive a cigar? Was it the dark color of his skin?

NOTE: I've not read the book, and I've not seen the last episode of Season 2 when I wrote this.

Have You Seen the Season Finale Yet?

I'm not going to post it, because some people go nuts over trailers and call them spoilers. You can see a extended version on You Tube.

Protected Pages/Main Page Links

Hello All,

Three quick points I'd like to raise here:

1. Right now, there are no protected pages on this wiki (aside from the main page). Odds are, this will be changing soon as there are several larger pages that need significant work done to them as a result of speculation being added as content. If there is any page that comes to mind that should be protected right away, reach out to one of the admins (myself, HandOfWarren, or Freakenstine) and we'll look into it.

2. There's been a suggestion to expand what the interaction bar at the top of the main page links to (i.e., add more characters, locations, etc.). If anyone has any suggestions, list them here and, again, one of the admins will look into it.

3. There has also been a suggestion to create separate articles for characters as they appear in each form of media (e.g., an article for book Offred, an article for TV series Offred). Again, please leave your thoughts and suggestions here.

Thanks all,

Ben

Gilead's Ignorance Will Be Its Downfall.

You can't continue to abuse the "help" and not expect them to rise up against you. You don't drown the buddy of the guys with the guns. I often wonder how Ofglen #2 got the bomb she used to blow up the new Red Center (aka: Rachel and Leah Center). The "help" (even the Eyes) are just doing what is necessary to live.

No bases for this at all, just a feeling. Serena Joy will kill Fred. What's up with the guy that Emily is living with now?

The Ultimate Sacrafice

Offred gave up her freedom for Holly. She could've gotten away and was planning to but because she was in labor she had to choose between her life and her babies. She chose her babies. Unless, by some twist of fate, those who come to save her aren't from Gilead. Or it's Nick who's somehow escaped from the clutches of whoever's kidnapped him.

The Last Ceremony

Lots to unpack here!

What did you guys think of the episode overall? Where do you think they took Nick? Why didn't they just leave the car behind? How long do you think Offred will survive alone?

New Admins and Bureaucrats

Hello All,

I'm starting this thread to discuss having new admins/bureacrats on this wiki. Right now, the only user who has the privileges associated with these ranks (e.g., being able to protect a page, delete pages, manage the wiki, etc.) is Freakenstine, who has been inactive for the last two months or so. I'm not proposing stripping Freakenstine's privileges or anything like that. Only having other users given those privileges so that they can act to manage the wiki and ensure it continues to grow.

I've already reached out to Community Central about this issue (I apologize for jumping the gun). However, it is likely they will need to see some evidence of a discussion on the issue before they make a decision.

I'm more than happy to take on either an admin or bureacratic role on this wiki. I have a lot of free time that I can devote to it. I feel that I've contributed significantly since I joined and will continue to do so. But I know that this wiki has other active users and I think it would be beneficial to have multiple users in these roles. So please comment if you are interested or would like to nominate another user or if you have anything else you'd like to contribute.

Thanks---Ben

Last Ceremony

So, Hulo released the Ep10 promo... what do you think will happen?
The scene where Aunt Lydia interrupts Serena's "fake-labour" and also the scene where Waterford sits June in the back seat of the car intrigue me.

Mapping Gilead

Has anyone attempted to create a map of Gilead from all the clues in the book and TV series (and any other sources)? I know that there is some speculation on the “Gilead” and “United States” pages. It would be interesting to see where the “colonies” are (presumably within a couple days’ drive of Boston). I think it’s reasonable to assume that with the strength of the US military, there must have been significant resistance (and there were the reports of ongoing conflict in Illinois, Florida, and other places). It seems unfathomable that Gilead encompasses the entire continental US, rather there must be places of relative control (like in the Boston area), others where there is still resistance, and some where Gilead has no power. There are some clues, “Letters” that we’re disseminated mention a few places where Gilead presumably has total control. New York State is part of Gilead, given what the Mexican ambassador said. What else?
That said, if Gilead could take over one of the most liberal cities in the US (Boston), maybe they do have more complete control?

That Nick's request...

Can anyone explain to me why in the episode of the explosion Nick asked to be transferred from home? Why would he stay away from June?

Aunt Lydia?

I was a godmother to my sister’s child. He died. It wasn’t my fault. Aunt Lydia to June.

There's a crack forming in Gilead.

Proposal for a common template for new and existing pages.

After reading through a majority of the articles in this Wiki, it seems to me that we should have a common template in place for various types of pages (characters, locations, etc.). Most of the pages seem to follow common themes and timelines (especially characters, which are largely sorted by timeline, only with differing headings depending on the user who created the page), but it would be nice to get something solid in place to act as a guideline for new pages and new users who wish to contribute.

Other wiki's that I've visited that deal with a TV series seem to order their character pages along the lines of what that character does or is mentioned as doing in a given episode (i.e., use episodes as headings for character pages, instead of the more general "Present: Season One" or "In the Series".). Same with locations when their only seen or referenced in certain episodes.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
